BLACKFACE

Experimental, Digital Video Installation, Created by Sophia Reed, Rome, May 2016

America’s race relations motivate my analysis of black representation, a topic addressed in my all my works. The narrow perspectives media presents directly affect the mindset people of color, and especially artists of color. Historically, our work does not receive the attention images of our mug shots, mutilation, or sexualized bodies do. Not only is it harmful depicting us this way it is insulting to the talent and resilient legacy of Black Americans. While living in Italy I made BLACKFACE, a film that questioned the accuracy of black history since racism has always been the author.

Dream Series: Dream #1

Experimental, Digital Video Installation, Created by Sophia Reed, Rome, April 2016

Dreams are products of your brain firing off chemicals that register as images and emotions, and can be quite powerful on the dreamer. Listening to people retell you their dreams is boring because you aren't experiencing them the same way the storyteller did. Dream Series is my attempt to recreate dreams so we can experience one another's dreams more authentically, without dramatization but with sights and sounds that impact you and take you to where the dreamer was last night
